What is Butter Box and how does it work?
Butter Box is an off-the-grid device that runs on a Raspberry Pi and broadcasts its own WiFi network. Once you connect to the network, you can access the Butter app store, download free ad-free apps, join encrypted chatrooms, and communicate with others—all without needing internet or electricity. Everything is stored locally on the Butter Box itself.
Can I make my own Butter Box?
Yes! You can create your own Butter Box by downloading a pre-made image and installing it on a Raspberry Pi using a MicroSD card and the standard RPi Imager. Butter provides downloadable .iso images, and you can also customize your setup using their open source repository with full documentation available on GitLab.
Who can get a Butter Box?
Butter ships Butter Boxes to partner organizations around the world that serve communities with limited or no internet access. If you work with an underconnected community that could benefit from offline access to apps and communication tools, you can reach out to the Butter team via email to request a box.
